How Do Water Softeners Work?
Water softeners work by ion-exchange. In a water softener, hard water minerals (calcium and magnesium) are exchanged for soluble sodium or potassium ions. As a result, the water becomes “soft” because the minerals that cause hardness are no longer present. The softened water not only tastes better but also helps to reduce scale build-up on household appliances and plumbing fixtures.
Hard water can have unique odors that are unpleasant. These minerals are removed when the water goes through the water softener. After going through the water softening system, it’s better for skin and better for plumbing and appliances.
What is Reverse Osmosis?
Reverse Osmosis is a water purification process that uses a semipermeable membrane to remove ions, molecules, and larger particles from drinking water. RO is also used to reduce the concentration of dissolved solids like salt, fluoride, and other minerals in water. RO systems are famous for making water better and healthier. Reverse osmosis also removes sediment and chlorine from the water supply. The entire process drives water through a semipermeable membrane to remove particles. After doing this, the water that leaves the membrane also goes through a post-filter process. RO water has a lot less impurities and contaminants. It has lower levels of sodium. It doesn’t have any bacteria or parasites either. Reverse Osmosis is better water for cancer patients and better for overall health.
Benefits of Water Softeners?
Some studies suggest 85% to 90% of homes and businesses in Central Ohio have hard water. If you live in the Greater Columbus area and you want to enhance your water quality, you should call Columbus Plumbing & Drain right away. Check out our long list of benefits for setting up a new water softener or a new water filtration system:
Saves Money
This is benefit belongs at the top of our list for a reason. Soft water doesn’t have the minerals and ions known to cause buildup in and around plumbing systems, fixtures, pipes, and other appliances. Because this helps make plumbing equipment last longer, it also saves you money from having to make expensive repairs. Whenever minerals build up in pipes, on surfaces and inside drains, it narrows the water’s pathway. This can result in pressure that progressively gets worse as more builds up over time. It can also increase the amount of energy necessary to keep water heated or to keep heated water inside water heaters.
Better Tasting Water
While the decision to install a water softener and/or water purifier has little to do with flavor, one of the common benefits you shouldn’t overlook is related to the improvement of the water’s taste. One of the reasons homeowners have them installed is to improve the water’s overall taste for drinking and cooking. Better-tasting water is one of the biggest benefits of installing a new water softener or new water filtration system. RO water always tastes better; it is also much better for your health. Food and beverages can taste better if the water is softened and purified.
Keeps Dishes & Dishware Clean
Hard water causes spots on sinks, bathtubs, faucets, dishes, and everything else that your household water comes into contact with. These stains can be kept at bay by eliminating these types of elements from the water supply. It’s not uncommon to see a ring of dirt and grime surrounding sinks and bathtubs because soap doesn’t rinse off as well with hard water. Soap rinses off better goes down the drain much easier when you use softened water.
Softer Skin and Silkier Hair
Smoother feeling skin and stronger hair are additional benefits of water softeners. This is because chlorine and/or hard water minerals, which are much less common in water, are removed. Because your skin will not be as dry, you won’t need as much lotion after washing it when you have a water softener. With hard water, however, soap creates a curd rather than a lather. Because soap lathers much better with softened water, water softeners are better for your skin and hair.

What is hard water?
Water that contains a high concentration of minerals, particularly calcium and magnesium. These minerals can cause water to be harder to treat in municipal water treatment facilities and can also form scale on pipes and other water-using appliances over time. Additionally, hard water can make it more difficult to get sudsing action when using soap or detergent and can leave spots on dishes and glassware.
Guidelines standards for water classification include 0 to 60 milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate, which is classified as soft. From there, 61 to 120 mg per liter is considered moderately hard and 121 to 180 milligrams per liter is considered hard. Anything over 180 per liter as very hard.
What is a water softener?
A water softener is a device used to remove hardness minerals from water. These minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, can cause scaling or fouling on the inside of water pipes and other water-using appliances. Water softeners remove this calcium and magnesium and improve plumbing systems and how they function. They also remove unwanted minerals that cause hard water. Softer water is better for pipes and plumbing-related appliances connected to it.
How often should salt be added to a water softener?
Salt should be added to residential water softeners about every six months. They should be checked for salt levels about once a month. To ensure adequate levels of water softening production, make sure your salt level is about halfway. Because newer models are more efficient with salt usage, experts recommend adding salt every 6 to 8 weeks or so. Nevertheless, it’s always a good idea to check frequently to ensure everything is working the way you need it to.
